COASTLINE FROM SANTA TERESA DI GALLURA TO POLTU QUATU
Passing Santa Teresa di Gallura, we will take into consideration the Northern coast from Punta Marmorata to Poltu Quatu. This part of Sardinia is characterized by beautiful bays and spectacular views of the Archipelago. The most important points are definitely the town of Palau, the villages of Cannigione and Baja Sardinia and definitely the two beautiful harbours of Porto Raphael and Poltu Quatu. Palau is located in one of the most spectacular branch point of the North-Eastern coastline of Sardinia and it represents a real paradise corner with some beaches between the most beautiful of the whole island. The beach of Porto Faro with its very white and fine sand, the beach of La Sciumara and the half-moon shaped beach of Isuledda are the most enchanting of this area. For windsurf lovers the white sand beach of Baia di Liscia is a must. Not to be missed is the spectacular natural “Roccia dell’Orso” (bear’s rock) in Palau, from where you can see an amazing and unique view of the town and the Archipelago. The Marina of Porto Raphael lies in the extreme North of the island promontory, Punta Sardinia, surrounded by huge granite rocks eroded and shaped by the wind. His fame increases as a landing place for small boats and a place for refreshment, in the 60s, thanks to the realization of Porto Rafael, destination of many elites figures who contributed to the success of the famous Piazzetta. Poltu Quatu. ‘’Hidden Port’’ in Sardinian Gallura’s dialect, it's a marvellous artificial port that benefits of the lights and flashes of the close Porto Cervo and all the Emerald Coast. It has been designed to resemble an ancient fishing village built around the traditional circular square, with charming narrow alleyways and stone buildings. It was founded in 1987 for creating a safe harbour and allowing the sea lovers to navigate it without giving up the finer pleasures of life. A prestigious hotel, restaurants and glamour shops are animating the life during the summer. Baja Sardinia and Cannigione are two nice sea villages full of life during the summer. Baja Sardinia in particular, apart from its beautiful pink color beach and clear blue waters, is a very well known spot for the Emerald Coast night life thanks to its famous clubs and discos.
LA MADDALENA ARCHIPELAGO
Seven main well known islands (Maddalena, Caprera, Santo Stefano, Spargi, Budelli, Razzoli a Santa Maria) form the Maddalena’s Archipleago which became park at the begininning of 1997, becoming at the same time the first National Park in Sardinia. The seven islands known as "Cuniculariae" (rabbit islands) during the Roman period are famous for their natural beauty done by irregular coasts, rocks eroded from the wind and the strong presence of the typical Mediterranean brush. The Archipelago, located in the stretch of between Sardinia and Corsica known as Bocche di Bonifacio, is part of the European network of areas of great environmental importance (Site of Community Importance and Special Protection Area) for the presence of unique habitats and creatures. The 62 islands and islets forming the Archipelago cover a surface area of 5,134 ha, 15,046 ha in the sea. The National Park covers - including land and marine areas - 20,180 ha, with a coastal development of 180 kilometers.
La Maddalena, main island and capital of the homonymous Archipelago, is the Park gateway. It is the one and only inhabited island, except for the village of Stagnali in Caprera Isle and the settlements of Santa Maria. La Maddalena is just 2 kilometres from the North-Eastern shore of Sardinia. The town of La Maddalena is located in the southest part of the island: stairs and little alleys characterize the historical centre, while the fishing and touristic port of Cala Gavetta, with a column dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi, give a very picturesque view to the turist. Caprera: Garibaldi's island, after La Maddalena, it is the second island of the Park for size, but it is the first one for the beauty of its coasts and beaches and for its particular Mediterranean flora. A visit to the Garibaldi Compendium is worthy. Budelli Island is considered one of the most beautiful islands of the Mediterranean, as well as symbol of Arcipelago di La Maddalena National Park, since it houses one of the most significant environmental sites of the area: “Spiaggia Rosa” (the pink beach). Razzoli and Santa Maria Islands are nearly united to Passo degli Asinelli. Razzoli Island lies in the northernmost section and is striking for its imposing cliffs and the shapes of its rocks, resembling Henry Moore's sculptures. Nibani, Mortorio, Soffi and Camere are four islands situated in the South-East of the Archipelago, in front of Costa Smeralda, a few miles from Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo, an ideal destination for yachtsmen. Spargi Island is the biggest of the four minor islands of the archipelago and is famous for its eastern beaches. Of granite origins, very rich in water and vegetation, it houses several protected bird species. Cala Corsara, Cala Connari, Cala Granara, and many other inlets surrounded by big granite rocks. The archipelago offers many opportunities for different amazing itineraries by sea and land. Get ready for amazing diving and snorkeling experiences, for beautiful routes full of nature and very singular historical traces, and don’t miss the chance to stop in one of our most recomended restaurants in the Archipelago. Please download the map and the rules of the park and see in our tour list our main suggestions.
COSTA SMERALDA
Emerald Coast (Costa Smeralda) is a 55 km long coastal area located in Northern Sardinia. It is surrounded by beautiful beaches spreading across a large area. The beaches in this region are very charming and surrounded by villages which are built according to the organized urban plan. The place is usually visited by tourists all across the globe coming from different sectors like business, entertainment as well as politics. The lovely sea view makes the most of the tourists' attraction.
The two main destinations in the Emerald Coast are the picturesque sea villages of Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo.
PORTO CERVO
Porto Cervo, the heart of the Emerald coast, is located on the homonymous gulf. The port and the small town were created by Prince Karim Aga Khan IV with the creation of Consorzio Costa Smeralda (Emerald Coast Group) in 1962. The architecture of the whole area has been inspired to a ‘neomediterranenan’ style, with very low impact on the natural surroundings. The area has been deeply changed and has become one of the most exclusive turistic location of all Med and the world. Until that moment, the beaches were grazing lands for the cows, that were then transferred to spend the winter on the islands of Mortorio and Soffi. From the beginning of the sixties, architects like Luigi Vetti, Jacques Couelle and others were called to build what is nowadays a very famous destination known for its luxury hotels, marinas and sportive centres, home of the famous Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and a real must for the International Jet Set. The Porto Cervo summer is a wonderful display for regattas, fashion shows, golf tournaments and top brands shopping. Between the most famous beaches around the area: Liscia Ruja, Spiaggia del Principe, Romazzino and Capriccioli.
CALA DI VOLPE
Breathtaking views and pristine beaches best describe this popular tourist spot in the heart of the Costa Smeralda. This near-perfect travel destination is overflowing with celebrities and attractions, and here you’ll find some of the most highly regarded Costa Smeralda hotels. Its strategic position offers easy access to other famous beaches as well. The small village is best known for the luxury hotel with the same name – Hotel Cala di Volpe – part of “The Luxury Collection” operated by the renowned Starwood hotel chain.
PORTISCO
Among all beautiful locations there's Portisco, in North-East Sardinia, a small village which seems to have outgrown its own size with a reputation for enchanting beauty and a unique cultural identity. Located in the province of Olbia-Tempio and specifically at the municipality of Olbia, Portisco gained a notable importance due to its strategic position between Porto Rotondo and Porto Cervo. The locational advantage of Portisco has undoubtedly made it a favorite travel destination for those who love the coastline and finding itself near the Gulf of Cugnana, it is also a favourite for the sailing enthusiasts. Marina di Portisco has 589 moorings, from 4 to 90 metres long, 16 dedicated places for Maxi Yachts with high draughts, all arranged around 10 quays. Comfortable, solid, safe wharfs in reinforced concrete, with the possibility of parking your car close to your mooring and load and unload items. A marina that combines facilities for taking care of your boat and a prompt, professional welcome for anyone mooring here at Portisco.
PORTO ROTONDO
Porto Rotondo is on the North-Eastern Sardinia and is part of Olbia’s Municipality. Its area extends for 300 hectares approximately, from the Gulf of Cugnana up to the Gulf of Marinella. Since 1967, due to the care which has been taken to preserve the natural environment of the Porto Rotondo area, international investors have made this area one of the most sought after destinations of the most exclusive tourism. Porto Rotondo is today the sworn rival of the relatively close Emerald Coast, attracting exponents from the International Jet Set. The Piazzetta, entirely created in local stone, the granite amphitheatre, and the Church of St Lorenzo are of great architectural interest. Here one finds the boutiques of the world's top fashion designers, interior decorators and craftsmen. The harbour, where some of the most beautiful yachts of the Mediterranean are moored, is not to be missed.
OLBIA
Framed in a landscape of great beauty, between the striking coastline of Capo Ceraso, Golfo Aranci and the Isle of Tavolara, Olbia is today, as it was in the past, a leading way to and from the world. Renown to the many for its passengers harbour and international airport, over the years Olbia managed to establish itself as one of the top touristic destination of Sardinia, losing the label of being just a stop-over. Named “The Happy” by the Greeks, Olbia is nowadays the referral centre for the entire Costa Smeralda, well known for places like Porto Rotondo and San Pantaleo - that have made Sardinia a famous and stylish resort location since the sixties. South of Olbia, holiday spots like San Teodoro and Budoni are maybe less VIP-style but have become a favourite destination amongst youngsters and families, with an offer less exclusive yet more affordable. Get “on the road”, to admire the wonders of the coastline of Olbia and Gallura in general; by boat to discover small wild creeks and sandy white beaches, rich Mediterranean maquis, are the best ways to enjoy a fabulous sea. Either going North or East, the landscape is spectacular.
The Gulf of Olbia has been for centuries a strategic crossroad of navigators – a harbour to the great civilizations of the past. Nowadays, more than ever, it is the main approach to the North-East of Sardinia. The Port of Olbia hosts a thriving mussels business and represents a well-established international cruise destination. It is the main Italian port in terms of traffic, with more than 3,5 million passengers, and it’s the main shore for big companies such as Mobylines. Remarkable is also the activity of the nearby port of Golfo Aranci, where Sardinia Ferries lands. On the other side, the Olbia Costa Smeralda international airport links the north of the Island to the main Italian cities and international capitals. Flights to Olbia generated almost 2 million passengers in 2011. It’s considered one the most important and cutting-edge airport in Italy, thanks as well to the recent restyling and extension. Very profitable is also the business of the private flights, run by Eccelsa. Its record figures and the outstanding services are the flagship of the airport.
OROSEI GULF
The Gulf of Orosei is located on the Eastern coast of Sardinia, between Punta nera (North) and Capo di Monte Santu (South). A very sharp geological division separates this gulf in two different regions. Their landscapes are different as well as the origin of their territories. The Northern territory is characterised by low-lying coastal zones, sandy beaches and pine woods behind them, while the Southern area, where Cala Gonone is located, is marked by a calcareous mountain chain, covered by typical Mediterranean maquis.
CALA GONONE
Cala Gonone is strategically positioned between the mountains and the rocky coastline with electric blue sea on the dramatic East coast of the island. It is a growing holiday resort offering boat trips to the coves, grottos and rock pools along the picturesque coastline with secluded beaches only accessible by boat. The town is also an ideal base for exploring the natural beauty of the inland mountains, lakes and waterfalls as well as the traditional villages known for cheese, wines and handicrafts. The most renowned beaches along the coast includes Cala Goloritzè, Cala Mariolu, Cala Sisine and Cala Luna.
DORGALI
Cala Gonone belongs to the municipality of Dorgali. This area is one of the luckiest ones of Sardinia because of the variety of its landscapes: the Orosei gulf crystalline waters and the Supramonte unpolluted mountains, which constitute its precious natural patrimony. Arts and crafts, agriculture, cattle breeding and tourism are some of its economic strengths. The wine-grower cooperative, the cheese producer association, the olive-grower cooperative, the carasau bread bakeries, as well as its many confectioneries are the main attractions of this agricultural based economy.
